I had to pleasure to attend yesterday a seminar\u00a0inaugurating\u00a0the “students for change<\/a>”\u00a0initiative. It was heartening to see high school students seriously\u00a0concerned\u00a0about the that state of education and Egypt and trying\u00a0passionately\u00a0to do something about it. They expressed their concerns about:<\/p>\n
    \n
  1. The poor state of education in Egypt generally where the \u00a0focus is in on rote learning and very little\u00a0emphasis\u00a0in placed on creatively or decent\u00a0intellectual\u00a0development\u00a0<\/li>\n
  2. The growing disparity in the\u00a0quality of education between elite schools for the well to do and the public schools that have\u00a0suffered for decades from\u00a0under-funding\u00a0and general\u00a0corruption.<\/li>\n
  3. The need for students to have a voice in shaping general education policies as well as those\u00a0within\u00a0their schools. Student\u00a0government has been either non-existent\u00a0or merely ceremonial during the Mubark era.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The presenters put forth a number of ideas to start building some sort of cohesion among students from different schools and to get them to start working together. They had a range of activities around sports and talent development. They posed questions for\u00a0audience\u00a0about how structure themselves and to get things moving. They were concerned about getting the balance right between getting not being top heavy or \u00a0dictatorial while fostering a unity of\u00a0purpose and objective.<\/p>\n

    It was clear to me that the issues of organization and trying address complex problems at the grass roots is something that Egypt as whole in struggling with in\u00a0rediscovering its route to\u00a0democracy. Seeing young students trying with a great deal of passion and\u00a0enthusiasm to work those issues out confirms to me that this land will never be the same<\/a>.<\/p>\n
