Wondering through an old town
\nI saw a sight that made me frown
\nPeople running all over the place
\nWith no purpose, but an angry face<\/p>\n
Tearing houses in which they dwell
\nBarking words I can not tell
\nBreaking mirrors and shattering glass
\nWhat an awful fate this has come to pass<\/p>\n
They smashed all that could glimmer
\nTheir ugly faces it could mirror
\nI asked a man what is going on
\nTo the beautiful city of a thousand songs<\/p>\n
He stared at me in total confusion
\nThen said “We lost all truth for an illusion”
\n“At first it was truth that we were seeking
\nBut lost all hope when we lost all meaning”<\/p>\n
“Of many Gods we did create
\nThen we destroyed and declared their fate”
\nOf what is sacred we did not respect
\nMany noble meaning we did dissect ”<\/p>\n
“We studied stars with microscopes
\nViewed atoms with telescopes<\/p>\n
“We uttered word we shouldn’t speak
\nTurned heaven’s gift into a freak
\nWe’ve broken vows we shouldn’t break
\nOur existence became a funny mistake”<\/p>\n
“Then our hearts turned to dust
\nNothing left that we can trust
\n“God is dead” the man proclaimed
\n“Man is god, man is great”<\/p>\n
“When man is god all is abstruse
\nWhat use to him, is now the truth
\nOf a murky mix he did evolve
\nIn murky chaos he must now dissolve”<\/p>\n
“All must be now undone
\nAll hope is lost all meanings gone”
\nI walked away in disbelief
\nMy heart now filled with so much grief<\/p>\n
What tragic end could all this be
\nFor men with eyes but could not see
\nWhat strange turns this world does take
\nWhen men are stung by a life-giving snake<\/p>\n
Logic used to break man’s chains
\nFrom chains of logic it should break again
\nI weep for that post-modern man
